Gypsum

Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dehydrate, with the chemical formula CaSO. 4• 2H2O. It is widely mined and is used as a fertilizer and as the main constituent in many forms of plaster, blackboard/sidewalk chalk, and drywall.

The Khewra mine is one of the largest gypsum mines in Pakistan. The mine is located in Punjab. The mine has reserves amounting to 25 million tons of gypsum.

Gypsum is a neutral salt with a pH of about 6.7 and a salt index of 8. It typically contains 16–18% sulfur and 20–22% calcium.
